El libro se llama “Claves para el mejoramiento Escolar”. En él se recopilan y analizan varias experiencias de establecimientos educacionales que han tenido trayectorias de mejora sostenidas en el tiempo; es un estudio (basado en establecimientos de básica y media) que presenta casos reales, donde directivos y docentes promueven estrategias para mejorar los aprendizajes y el desarrollo integral de sus estudiantes.
En el estudio se encontraron dos tipos de factores que influyen en las trayectorias de mejoramiento de una institución escolar; uno de ellos aborda los factores externos o estructurales que se refieren al contexto, como, dependencia administrativa, nivel socio-económico de los estudiantes, el tamaño de la escuela, entre otros. Estas variables pueden influir en los procesos de gestión, pero no explican por sí sola la trayectoria de una unidad educativa; lo que estimula a un establecimiento escolar a mejorar sus procesos de gestión y aprendizaje de sus estudiantes son los factores internos, es decir, aquellos elementos que pueden ser manejados y controlados por la escuela.
De acuerdo con el equipo de estudio, se deducen seis áreas que agrupan las bases para el mejoramiento escolar: liderazgo directivo; gestión de recursos humanos; gestión técnico-pedagógica; prácticas al interior del aula; formación de los estudiantes y relación con las familias.
